I originally was going to exhibit my piece ‘The Wedding’ as a small A4 piece that viewers would be able to interact with by uncovering the cyanotype by pulling down the acetate. However the curators of the exhibition and I felt that this piece needed to be bigger and more impactful. So we opted for the use of projection of the negative on acetate over the print. This worked really well in my opinion as instead of the more intimate viewing, I used a bigger space to convey the amount of space that my family takes up in my mind and how much they are present within my life. This was also more impactful to viewers as it was hard for them to miss it whilst walking past. However, the position in the exhibition space was not the best place for my piece as it was next to the walkway where people would walk in front of the projector blocking the view. In my next projection piece I will opt for a darker area for my work to stop obstruction of the work.
The red string serves as a symbolic representation of the influence and control exerted by the mafia in Sicily. Inspired by the visual motif of string commonly found on crime investigation boards, I deliberately incorporated this element into the artwork to evoke a sense of the grip that organised crime holds over Sicily. I wanted to communicate a message about the reality of Sicilian society, where the presence of the mafia dominates, shaping the social, political, and economic landscape.
