'Sixteen' is one of the photo screen prints featured within the collection 'The Photo Booth', 2023. I chose to exhibit this piece in a large 79x52cm frame, which I believe invokes a welcoming feel. I sought to emphasise its significance as a treasured memento by presenting it within this frame, giving the artwork a sense of familiarity, evoking the homely ambiance of a cherished family photograph displayed within a home.
Understanding the personal nature of the moment, I wanted to convey the profound significance of this memory. By presenting it in a way that draws attention, I aimed to create an emotional viewing experience and show that this is a cherished memory for my grandparents, in the hope that it would elicit emotional responses from viewers. Furthermore, the reaction of my Nonna, serves as a reminder of the emotional weight carried within each image and memory and witnessing her genuine response accentuates the power of visual storytelling.
Stepping away from the Pop Art style, I opted for a departure from the bold, graphic elements characteristic of pop art and I instead embraced a more subdued and contemplative aesthetic, allowing the essence of the moment to speak for itself. I sought to invite viewers into a quiet, reflective place, where they could engage with the emotions and simplicity within the photograph, instead of being overpowered by the bold colours.
