In these three paintings, I portray my sister through the lens of sainthood, drawing inspiration from classical Catholic iconography and emotional expressions and positions. The work recontextualises traditional religious portraiture using a contemporary subject.
The triptych format reinforces the sacred framing of my sister. Each painting reflects a different emotional state, reflecting different reasons for prayer. This is often seen in depictions of saints such as the Lady of Sorrows. By using depictions of Mary as inspiration, it allows me to turn a historically distant religious icon into something emotionally immediate and relatable.
