Castiglione. C. 'Statue' 2025. Graphite Pencil on Cartridge Paper, 30x42cm

This drawing depicts one of my sisters posing in a way that closely resembles the form of classical sculptures, particularly similar to Apollo and Daphne, 1622-1625, by the Italian artist Gian Lorenzo Bernini. In this piece, I aimed to capture the grace, and movement that characterise classical sculpture, which is often seen within Catholicism, whilst having a personal connection by using my sister as the subject.
I want to explore this idea of statues further as I like that by having her embody the statue, I explore the idea of transformation and how a living person can take on the timeless qualities of them.

Bernini, Gian Lorenzo, Apollo and Daphne, 1622-1625, Carrara marble, Galleria Borghese, Rome.
