Castiglione. C. 2024. Acrylic on Cartridge Paper, 29.7x42cm

I initially painted this piece using acrylics, but once it was finished, I realised it didn’t achieve the look I was aiming for. Acrylic paint dries too quickly, which made it difficult to achieve the smooth blending I wanted, resulting in a harsher appearance than I had intended.
As I researched traditional portraiture, particularly those depicting religious figures, I discovered that oil paint was the preferred medium of classical artists. This led me to experiment with oil paints, hoping to achieve a more authentic and traditional aesthetic that aligns with the historical influences I am exploring. This experimentation allowed me to capture the depth that characterises classical religious paintings, allowing for more emotional resonance to my portraits.
