After my initial session on screen printing, I was mainly interested in photo screen printing. I used photographs of my grandparents in a photo booth when they were teenagers to create 'Captured', 2023. Photo booth pictures often capture candid moments and raw emotions, this allows me to preserve the genuine essence of their youth, whilst adding an element of authenticity and spontaneity to the artwork.
I used various different coloured sugar paper to print on to, presented in a grid layout; a classic Pop Art style. Using this style, it not only modernises the vintage photographs in a way, but also adds layers of visual interest and complexity. I decided to exhibit these through a digital collage to juxtapose traditional printing techniques with contemporary technology, allowing for the creation of a visually striking piece that honours the past whilst resonating with modern audiences.
In ‘Intertwined’, 2023, I experimented with printing in different ways such as layering the print and printing upside down. This gave the prints a contemporary feel as it introduced elements of experimentation and spontaneity into the art process. By layering the print, I created depth and texture and printing upside down added a sense of unpredictability, resulting in unexpected compositions and visual juxtapositions, which challenges traditional ideas of printing.
