In the biro drawing, I wanted to experiment with a different medium to see how it could alter the overall tone and perception of the image. My goal was to see if the use of biro would contrast with the graceful and delicate nature of the subject, potentially giving the drawing a harsher, more intense quality. This allowed me to investigate how different artistic materials can influence the emotional and visual impact of a piece, shaping the way the viewer interprets the subject matter.
The graphite drawing depicts a statue of the Virgin Mary that belongs to my Nonna and is displayed in her home. I was drawn to this statue because it reminded me of the photographs I had previously taken; creating a connection between my work and the religious imagery I grew up around. I plan to do more drawings in this style, as I feel that the use of pencil lends a delicate and gentle quality to the piece.
